How to use (and why you need) anti-virus software

There are over 1 BILLION viruses and malware currently circulating the internet. That’s a big number. Sooner or later, one of these viruses is going to find its way onto your device.

This article explains what can happen if a virus infects your device and how to protect yourself from this threat.

How do viruses/malware infect your device?

Four common examples are:

  • Downloading infected files as email attachments, from websites or email
  • Clicking on links to malicious websites in emails, messaging apps or social network posts
  • Visiting compromised websites, where cleverly hidden viruses are downloaded when the webpage loads
  • Connecting your device to infected external hard drives or networks

How does anti-virus software work?

Anti-virus software is designed to detect and remove viruses and malware from your computer, tablet or phone. The software scans your device to quickly identify threats that the human eye can’t see. Some antivirus products (IPS 360 Protect includes Norton 360 Deluxe software) can identify an issue  BEFORE you land on a malicious website and block it (See image below).

How common are viruses?

Viruses, malware, spyware and ransomware can come from different sources but once they are in your device, they can be used by hackers to hack your personal or financial information, hack your webcam and much more.

The most expensive computer virus of all time was called MyDoom, it caused $38.5 billion of damages.

560,000 new pieces of malware are detected every day. There are now more than 1 billion malware programs out there.

24,000 malicious apps are blocked every day.

What happens if a virus infects your device?

A virus can affect you in a number of ways. It can damage your programs, delete your files and reformat or erase your hard drive, which reduces performance or crashes your entire system.

Some malware can be used to hack your webcam so the hacker can see what you do through your camera. This is why Mark Zuckerberg and former FBI Director James Comey cover their webcam.  Read more here.

Worryingly, hackers can use viruses to access your personal information to steal your sensitive information (potentially financial information) or destroy your data.

How to protect yourself?

There is a long established multi-billion pound software industry which defends against this threat and you have probably heard of it. It’s called anti-virus software.

IPS 360 Protect includes anti-virus software in a low-cost subscription (with many other useful tools).  The good news is it is very simple to use.

The good news is it is very simple to use and you can watch our video above to show you how to use it.   [Please note that in the video Charlie states there are 520 billion viruses,  this should be over 1 billion.]
